What is a Diabetic or CCD Diet?

ccd diet

A complicated term deserves a simple explanation.  A CCD diet is a carbohydrate controlled diet.  Which is really a diabetic diet.  But I truly want you to think of it as a plan, instead of a temporary thing.  Because you will live with this for the rest of your life.

1.  Diabetic patients should work to manage their overall amount of carbohydrates they consume.  Carbohydrates are both simple and complex sugars found in all types of foods.  Pasta, bread, fruit, vegetables and sugar all has carbohydrate.  It just depends on the amounts and type of carbohydrate that you eat.  But most diabetics should eat less than 60 gm of carbohydrate per meal.

2.  You can subtract the amount of the fiber listed on the label from the total amount of carbohydrate because it’s not going to be absorbed.  You are better off eating more fruits and vegetables than simple sugars.

3.  Fats, while they do not immediately affect your blood sugar, are hard on your heart and arteries over the long term.  So you should eat healthier fats, such as extra virgin olive oil and other monounsaturated fats.  All diabetics tend to have a higher risk and likelihood of developing heart disease or other complications.  So you should limit the overall amount of saturated fats and trans-fats that you eat.

4.  Exercise is very important.  You can lower your blood sugar level when it’s high by taking a brisk walk – as your muscles move they use glucose from the blood and help you use it up.

Trying to eat a healthier diet overall as a diabetic patient is important to your health and well being.  Try to consume about 60 gm of carbohydrate per meal with higher fiber foods and lower fat to make a better plan.  When you are looking for a diabetic meal plan to help you get started, that is what we do!  Check out the options.
