When you are diagnosed with kidney disease, one of the most important things that your doctor will tell you is to modify your diet according to your condition. Depending on your stage of kidney disease, your physician might recommend you to have a 1800 calorie renal diet. This 1800 calorie renal diet should consist of different food groups yet should also be low in fat and low in salt. The minerals in a 1800 calorie renal diet should also be limited in order to prevent waste products from building up in your blood. This will help control your blood sugar and blood pressure levels, which can further aggravate your kidney disease if not controlled.

Tips on Creating a 1800 Calorie Renal Diet

There are several points that you need to remember in making a 1800 calorie renal diet. First of all, you need to control your sodium or salt intake, since poorly controlled sodium levels in the body will result to high blood pressure. Furthermore, it can cause excessive thirst, making it hard for you to control your fluid intake. Limit your sodium intake by avoiding any seasonings that contain the word “salt.” In addition, avoid salt substitutes and avoid salty meats like ham, bacon, sausage, canned meats, and hotdogs. Salty snacks should also be avoided such as cheese curls, salted crackers, chips, and nuts. Instant noodles, canned soup, frozen dinners, pickles, olives, bottled sauces, and MSG all have high sodium content, so you should avoid including them in a 1800 calorie renal diet.

Another thing that you need to control in your renal diet is your protein intake, since the kidneys are already having a hard time handling protein. In your 1800 calorie renal diet, make sure that you eat 7-8 ounces of protein each day, such as chicken, turkey, beef, eggs, seafood, pork, and veal. Meat as big as a deck of cards contains three ounces of protein.

Other minerals that you need to limit in a renal diet include phosphorus and potassium. You should also control your fluid intake in a 1800 calorie renal diet, usually around 4 cups of liquid per day.

You can have bread, combined with tuna salad with egg, celery, lettuce, mayonnaise, and tea. As for your afternoon snack in your 1800 calorie renal diet, you can have once cornbread and half a serving of beef patty. Finally, for dinner, a 1800 calorie renal diet can have yeast roll, fried chicken, a glass of tea, 1 1/2 servings of yellow squash, and margarine.

Do not forget to consider your fluid intake in your 1800 calorie renal diet, since you will certainly have fluid restrictions. Always keep a record of how much fluid you are consuming
