Eating Breakfast Is a Healthy Start to a Healthy Day

breakfast is a healthy startEveryone has heard the saying that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. It is an ideal that has heard time and time again, starting at childhood. How true is this old adage, though? Why, exactly, is breakfast considered to be so important? Is there something more to this than just what your mom told you?

Eating a healthy and balanced breakfast is an important start to your day. Skipping breakfast can cause you to have low energy, low blood sugar, brain fog, and a general feeling of disease. Plus, if you skip breakfast you’ll often end up overeating later in the day. This is usually either because you are so hungry from skipping your morning meal, or because of a misguided idea that skipping breakfast allows you many more calories later in the day. For these reasons, people also tend to choose less healthy options, which lead to consuming a lot of extra calories along with extra fat, sodium, and other bad stuff.

Perhaps most importantly, eating a healthy breakfast gives your body the calories and energy it needs to function. If you skip breakfast, you are more likely to feel tired, run down, and even grouchy. The real point of each meal is to give you the energy you need to sustain your body. Skipping meals can even affect your thought processes and mood.

Easy Breakfast Options

Quick Egg Scramble: Two eggs or egg whites, with your choice of cheeses and diced veggies like peppers and onions. You can even make use of leftover proteins such as shrimp or chicken and even lunch meats. Quickly scramble everything together and serve with a slice of wheat toast.

Apple Cinnamon Quick Oats: Prepare quick version of oatmeal as directed. While oatmeal is cooking, sauté a chopped green apple in a very small amount of butter or margarine and sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg. The heat will bring out the sweetness of the apples. Top your oatmeal with the apple compote and drizzle a little agave syrup over the top.

Breakfast Melt: Fill an English muffin with an egg white, turkey breast, tomato, and a slice of cheese. Warm it all together to create a delicious melty breakfast sandwich that will surely beat any drive through breakfast sandwich. Make your own variation of this quick and easy option with turkey bacon, veggies, avocado, and more.

Breakfast might not be the very most important meal of the entire day, but a healthy breakfast should absolutely be a priority. A healthy, balanced breakfast will keep you energized and focus during your busy day. Your healthy breakfast, along with some sensible snacks and a balanced lunch, will keep you going strong all day long.
