You have no doubt heard the popular saying that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. Well, what you have heard is true. Breakfast is an especially important meal because it starts your whole day, fills your tummy, and stabilizes your blood sugar after a long night of not eating.
Breakfast can also tend to be the most dangerous meal of the day for people with heart disease and other chronic illnesses. While many people know what healthy foods to eat during lunch and dinner, many people simply do not know what kind of Hearty Breakfasts with Heart Disease they can have. Let’s face it, not everyone can get by eating half a grapefruit for breakfast.
Luckily, there are plenty of hearty, healthy, and delicious options for you to eat for breakfast. These meals are perfect for people with heart disease, or those who are just trying to eat healthier.
Oatmeal
Just the word “oatmeal” can be off-putting for some people. Oatmeal gets a bad rep for being boring, but honestly it is all in how you dress it up. Oatmeal is an extremely versatile and delicious breakfast food that is quick and easy to make.
Dress up a bowl of hot steel cut oats with some delicious, fresh berries. The riper they are, the sweeter they are, and so you don’t even need any added sweeteners.
Make your bowl an island paradise. Tuck a small pat margarine into your oatmeal, and then add a bit of delicious coconut or almond milk. Top with two teaspoons natural brown sugar. As the margarine melts and the sugar blends into the milk, every bite will be pure bliss.
Enjoy some apple-cinnamon delight. Chop up a small apple and stir it into your oatmeal with cinnamon and toasted pecans. Add a small amount of agave syrup if you need an additional touch of sweetness.
Whole Wheat Pancakes
For a sweet start to your morning, you can still enjoy one of everyone’s all-time favorite breakfasts. Whole grains or whole wheat flour make pancakes that are almost good for you. You can purchase whole grain or whole wheat pancake mix in most grocery stores, or you can make your own using whole wheat flour with baking powder and baking soda in place of the usual all-purpose flour. To make yours extra special, add in some other grains like oatmeal, corn flour, and flax seed. These are super healthy and when topped with a little all-natural maple syrup and fruit, delicious.
Egg White Omelets
Egg lovers with heart disease need not panic. Plain, scrambled egg whites might be boring indeed, but add in some peppers, onions, mushrooms, and other veggies and make yourself an omelet instead. Top with a little salsa or hot sauce and this medley of flavors could not be any further from boring and tasteless.
There are plenty of delicious and hearty breakfasts with heart disease. The biggest trick is getting past the idea of all of the things you “cannot” have, and focusing on all of the things you CAN have. These three ideas are versatile enough to make use of almost every day, and make great go-to meals that you can change up as you see fit. Click here for more meal ideas!
